Revision programee for Summer 2012
You have now completed the Economic development module booklet.
Case studies are:
Industrial decline in South Wales – coal mining
Hi tech industry – M4 corridor
Industrial Location in Brazil
Mulitbationl corporations – Coca Cola
Impact of economic activity – Carajas
There are 15 case studies make sure you know them if in doubt download them again from the link lower down this page. Learn some key facts and place names so you can include specifics in your answer.
Have a final read through your notes/cue cards/mindmaps. Read out loud if that helps
Practice drawing a labelled diagram of a waterfall, meander, spit and arch just in case one of these comes up.
The Exam
Read all the six questions and then make your choice of ONE from each section. Choose based on the case study and larger mark questions. Don’t get put off if you find a one or two mark question hard.
Read the section lower down on how your answers will be marked and bare this in mind. Remember if it asks you to describe do not explain. Don’t write out the question at the start is wastes time.
So: 1. Give two reasons why people migrate to the city.
Don’t write Two reasons that people migrate to the city are… Just put Firstly they hope to find a better job with more pay so they can provide for their family . Secondly better education for their children so they can get well paid jobs and become successful
You can use examples in your answers even if its not a case study question.
READ THE QUESTION answer what it asks not what you were hoping to be asked.
B – Box the command word
U – Underline the key words
G – Glance back at the question as you are answering so you stay on track
Divide your time up between the questions and leave yourself 5 minutes at the start to read the paper and 5 minutes at the end to check your answers
Useful website for hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanoes = www.weatherwizkids.com
Revision package on FROG see school departments / geography/ GCSE – dont revise economic development! Also there is a powerpoint on case studies which is the one we did on the revision day which some of you have requested. Skeppers x
Revision tip
Split your revision into small chunks of about 20 mins to half and hour. Take a small section of the course for example a single case study or an element such as coastal processes and features.
Now choose a strategy that works for you eg:
Draw a mind map
Write your notes out again neatly using colour coding
Turn your notes into cue cards
Create a large poster

Natural Hazards
There will be 6 questions, 2 on each topic you must do one from each topic.
BBC GCSE Bitesize is also useful http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/geography/

How will my answers be marked in the Summer exam?
3 marks for skills e.g. OS map reading, graph reading, photograph analysis. This is point marked that means a mark for each correct poiint made
2 marks for knowledge e.g. definitions also point marked so giving the correct definition of hydraulic action.
3 x 4 mark questions testing knowledge and understanding – (point marking) These are marked either 4×1 (4 relevant points, 1 mark each) or 2×2 (2 relevant points and development meaning you have added detail to your answer)
8 mark case study (level marked) (here you will always have opportunity to develop 3 ideas)
L1 (1-3 marks) 3 simple points
L2 (4-6 marks) 3 developments of the simple points. (Can reach L2 without making 3 simple points)
L3 (7-8 marks) Given for place specific detail e.g. dates, specific facts e.g. number dead etc. (you cannot reach L3 without 3 developed points)
What do you mean by link ideas together?
Do you mean make a point and then back it up with explanations and reasons? Please could you give me an example of this relevant to the exam.
Thank you , Grace

In relation to the Case Studies download sheet, when it gives us the name of the Case Study on the flooding for an LEDC there is both Boscastle and Bangladesh, do we have to revise both or just pick one?
Thank you

With the case study ‘NE to SE Brazil’ rural to urban migration, is the work we did on ‘Rio De Janeiro’ part of this case study?
Thanks, Dani

To a certain extent Dani yes because Rio is the end destination for those people migrating to the south east. With this case study it has a couple of elements. Why are people migrating push and pull factors and then the impact of this on the place they have left and the place they are going. For this last part Rio is the key and the shanty towns – Rocinha, as pressure on the city has led to urban sprawl. I am in the process of working on a guide with briefing notes on each case study it should be uploaded before the easter weekend but it is taking me a while so bare with me! Do feel free to keep posting queries and as I will be checking in most days and will answer them. Happy Easter Egg eating – Skeppers.

Hey Miss, where if possible can i find a pass paper to? Thanks, Dani

Dani as its a new syllabus there was only one paper and it was a sample, you have sat that paper as the year 11 exam before christmas and also the 2 hazard questions you did before easter. The big revision pack I gave you has some little questions in it – good practice for the 2/3 marks questions. The revision pack I have put on here last week has practice case study questions at the end of each case study.

Miss,
Do we need to revise our notes on Hunting Island (Coastal Management) as it isn’t a case study?
Thanks.
By: Bryony Parsons on June 1, 2011
at 4:43 pm
Hi Bryony its worth looking at it in terms of the issues associated with coastal management but in terms of detailed revision Holderness is the case study. Make sure however you know the difference between hard and soft engineering and why they would be used. The advantages and disadvantages of both in particular in terms of their sustainability. Expensive schemes that need constant maintenance are not economically sustainable, schemes that work with the natural processes will be more environmentally sustainable. Hope this helps any more issues feel free to post.

Although the case study sheet does not mention the UK ageing population case study the CGP revision guide does- should we revise it?
Thank you,
Emily
By: Emily AM on June 8, 2011
at 1:41 pm
Emily It is not a named case study in the syllabus but I would revise it in terms of an example of the issues associated with an ageing populaiton and also possible strategies to deal with it. When answering a question you can therefore say eg UK and give examples that way. It should not come up as a case study question.
